Tokyo Travel Guide

Architecture in Tokyo has largely been shaped by Tokyo's history. Twice in recent history has the metropolis been left in ruins. Because of this, Tokyo's current urban landscape is one of modern and contemporary architecture, and older buildings are scarce.

Asakura Choso Museum

This unique museum is one of my favorites and is well worth a visit if you haven’t been to a Japanese home. It served as the residence and studio of sculptor Asakura Fumio (1883-1964), famous for his statues of statesmen, women, and cats, many of which are on display here. The house, which combines modern and traditional architecture, wraps around an inner courtyard pond fed by a natural spring, and contains some furniture and antiques in its many tatami rooms, including a beautiful library, a tearoom, and a room for enjoying the morning sun. There’s even a rooftop garden.
